Yoga Bywater offers several yoga classes a week taught mainly in the Iyengar tradition. We have recently added new classes. Yoga Bywater is located downtown New Orleans in Historic Bywater Neighborhood.
Yoga is an ancient art form, it is a scientific and highly evolved method used to develop awareness and refinement. In the beginning we work with the body (the familiar) to increase our capacity for concentration, and with time and maturity we begin to take this ability to more subtle practices and start to refine the breath (the unfamiliar). Eventually this can lead to a meditative quality for the mind, a deep state of awareness. In the practice of Yoga we look to create strength and stability in the body, evenness and steadiness in the breath, and when these two things come into balance, the mind has an opportunity to become quiet. Yoga is defined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as Yogas Citta Vritti Nirodha which means Yoga stills the fluctuations of consciousness, or Yoga is a quiet and still mind. "Yoga is the method by which the restless mind is calmed and the energy directed into constructive channels"(B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Yoga)
The Iyengar method of Yoga is a very safe method that all can participate in. In this method we use props to achieve alignment, build endurance, increase flexibility, and develop concentration. We all come to the practice of Yoga with different abilities, bodies, age, limitations, and strengths. The use of the props (blocks, chairs, ropes, blankets) allow all of us to achieve the maximum benefits of the poses regardless of our condition. Some of the health benefits of Yoga include stress relief, increased lung capacity, regulation of blood pressure, increased immune response, joint stabilization, prevention of osteoporosis, combats depression and anxiety, relief of general achiness, improves digestion, and soothes the nervous system, just to name a few.
It is my hope to help grow the Yoga community in the downtown Bywater & Marigny neighborhoods in 2017. I look forward to seeing returning students and meeting new ones. I hope to see you soon at Yoga Bywater.
